If you have an episode you wanted hear please send me an email at Jeff lostskillspodcast com. If I can answer your questions I will gladly do so on the podcast period I may even make a whole show about it.

I’m not an expert on log cabins but I was asked his question on how to repair some rotting logs on a wall of a cabin. This is what I think I would do to repair it and I came up with this actually before I asked anybody. I asked my dad about it and he told me what I thought was pretty much how they do it.

EPISODE 245 LEARNING A TRADE

I know today’s episode was supposed to be about water catchment but somehow i got off topic and started about learning a trade. Sometimes a decent episode comes out of my rants.

Learning a trade can be one of the best ways to learn a skill that can be with you for the rest of your life. There are many trades out there but i talk about welding because that is the trade i went to school for. Learning a trade is one way to have very little student debt or avoid it all together. When i went to welding school i paid $4,100. now the same program costs $8,400 and you can check it out here.

Now considering that the average starting wage for a welder is $33,277.00 thats not too bad of return on your investment to lean a skill that will be with you the rest of your life. Also in about 10 years there will be a shortage of people in the skilled trades when the last of the baby boomers retire in the next 10 or so years so the average salary is probably going up.  So if you want to hear about learning a trade that will be with you the rest of your life listen in today!

You can hear my episode on buying a welder by clicking the picture below.

EPISODE 237 REVERSE ENGINEERING

Today’s episode is on reverse engineering. What is reverse engineering you ask? Reverse engineering is the art of seeing something and deciding “Hey i can build that!” and being able to figure out how it’s made and replicating it for yourself. one of the benefits of reverse engineering something is being able to see any weak points and fixing them before they are a problem. Also you can take an idea and build it to your specifications and build it with better materials for yourself there by improving the usability and life expectancy of what you are building. So if you want to hear some of my thoughts on reverse engineering listen in to today’s episode .

EPISODE-195 5 GALLON BUCKET CHALLENGE

Hi everyone,

Today’s episode is what i am going to call the 5 gallon bucket challenge. I challenge everyone that listens to make something out of a 5 gallon bucket and send in some pics and i will post them up on the site. Why a 5 gallon bucket challenge? First off they are cheap you can get a bucket and a lid for 5 bucks or under, a lot of times you can get them for free at restaurants. Second , They have many uses besides carrying water. Third, you can modify them with very cheap tools , so anyone can participate.

5 gallon bucket

To me a 5 gallon bucket is one of the most versatile things you can have. Preppers use them for long term storage. Homesteaders use them to haul feed and water to animals. Home mechanics use them for catching fluids and carrying scrap metal. You can also just use them as a chair. Gardeners can use them as pots and to carry water and fertilizer. The possibilities are endless.

So please join me in the 5 gallon bucket challenge and make a project. Also please share this around and hopefully we will have a huge number of submissions.
